THE BOTTOM LINE
The Ardo Calypso Essentials is one of the most efficient and easy-to-use pumps on the market. Though it does not use 2-phase pumping functionality, the Calypso offers a wide range of speed and strength settings, allowing moms to find the best combination for a steady milk flow. The Calypso Essentials receives one of our highest overall ratings as a comfortable, strong, and quiet breast pump.

Detailed Review

Performance - 4/5
The Ardo Calypso Essentials offers moms a highly personalized pumping experience. The Calypso features 8 different levels of suction strength and 8 levels of speed.

Though Calypso doesn’t offer 2-phase pumping, in our testing we found it to have one of the highest maximum suction strengths available, making it an extremely capable option. Two-phase pumping is usually ideal because it mimics a baby’s natural nursing behavior. Phase one stimulates the breast’s letdown reflex through a rapid, gentle suction and phase two uses a strong and slower suction to maintain milk flow. The advantage of a pump with 2-phase design is that it automatically provides default modes for each phase. While the Calypso lacks this automatic feature, it does have all of the functionality needed to replicate a two phase pump, but would require you to manually adjust the settings during a pumping session to achieve a similar experience.
Portability - 4/5
The Calypso is a compact and lightweight pump, weighing just 1 pound. Though it does not come with its own case, it will fit easily into most carrying bags. For on-the-go convenience, the pump has the option of running on disposable AA batteries instead of an outlet.
Features and Accessories - 4.5/5
The Calypso features an easy-to-use digital interface to control the pump’s system. The pump comes with one set of 26 mm breast shields which will fit most moms. The company also sells 6 additional sizes that can be purchased seperately if needed. Breast shield size is determined by mom’s nipple size and most moms only discover which size is best for them once they’ve started pumping.

Unlike some other breastpumps, the Calypso does not have a timer or nightlight, which may be a minor inconvenience for some moms. Replacement parts and extra accessories aren’t readily available in retail stores and will likely need to be purchased online.

Calypso is covered under one of the best warranties in the industry: either 1-year or 400 pumping hours - whichever is longer. (400 hours is typically equivalent to pumping for 2 babies.) The pump has a green light that turns orange once it reaches the 400-hour mark. All the pump’s accessories are covered under an industry-standard 90-day warranty.
Acoustics - 5/5
The Calypso is one of the quietest pumps we’ve tested. Click the link to listen to the pump on its mid-level settings.
What it sounds like
Noise level: Very Quiet
Hygiene - 5/5

The Calypso features an advanced closed-system design for optimal cleanliness. Its “Vacuum Seal” technology uses an integrated membrane pot to create a barrier between the pump’s suction tubing and your pumped milk. This protects the pump and your milk from any trapped condensation or potential moisture buildup which can cause mold or mildew growth.

All pump parts are BPA free and dishwasher safe.
